In 1850 Nathaniel Hawthorn published a book called The Scarlet Letter where he describes the life of a woman Hester Prynne.   Hester had mothered a child she named Pearl Pearl.  In the novel, Hester struggled to live a life free of shame and disgrace she had gotten for birthing a child out of an affair and not a true marriage. The reason why Hester was not able to put the affair behind her or hold it close was because she was made to wear the red letter A on her chest so that all may know of her infraction. The true twist came when Mr Dimsdale, who had given her much grief was also found to be wearing a letter A as well and had lived a life of guilt and fear.
