It is through knowing a little more about Carver’s life that the reader sees the biographical connections between the story and his first marriage. By analyzing the setting, the departure of the husband, and the fight over the baby in “Popular Mechanics,” one begins to understand Carver’s feeling about the end of his first marriage.
