Before that, bibles had to be made by hand. Can you imagine the number of hours it would take to transcribe literally every single word from the bible? So using the printing press made that process much easier. Now that bibles are easy to manufacture, the demand increases drastically. With more bibles in homes, people now have a way to refer to the word of God, so they became more religious.
