If x and y are positive integers, and 3x + 2y = 13, what could be the value of y?
Find one of the two correct answers.
y = ____?

Answer :

javerink
3x - 2y = 13
3x - (2y/2) = (13/2)
3x - y = 6.5
(3x/3) - y = (6.5/3)
x - y = 2.16
(x-x) - y = (2.16 - x)
-y = 2.16 - x
(-y/-1) = (2.16/-1) -x

y = -2.16 - x

3x + 2y = 13
⇒ 2y = 13 - 3x
⇒ y = 1/2 (13-3x)

We know bot x and y are integers. So
if x = 1, y = 5  ---------------first solution
if x = 2, y = 3.5  -------------not a solution
if x=3, y = 2  ----------------second solution.

Since we need only one answer, y = 2

Hope it helps!
