poli/o is a combining form meaning gray and referring to the gray matter of the nervous system. White matter is made of myelinated nerve fibers that appear white. The nerve cell bodies are not myelinated and appear gray. The brain and part of the spinal cord that is made up of mostly nerve cell bodies is called gray matter.
